How Does Laser Surgery for Pets Work?

During laser surgery, we use a laser device to operate on your pet. The laser produces a special beam of light that penetrates skin and tissue.

CO2 laser surgery is the most common procedure for pets. The light emitted by a CO2 laser beam gets absorbed by water in the skin and soft tissue, vaporizing the cells to make cuts. The laser also cauterizes the tissue, which speeds up the procedure and helps kill bacteria.

The vet controls the level of laser beam absorption into the tissue, resulting in exceptional surgical precision.

Benefits of Laser Surgery for Pets

Compared to traditional surgery, laser surgery offers several important benefits for your pet:

Reduced Pain

In most instances, your pet will experience very little pain after laser surgery. The laser seals nerve endings as it cuts, preventing the raw ends characteristic of scalpel blades and reducing pain at the surgical site.

Less Swelling

Whenever an incision is made with scissors or a scalpel blade, the tissue becomes inflamed. With laser surgery, only the laser beam comes in contact with the tissue. The lessened contact and simultaneous cauterization result in less swelling after surgery.

Decreased Risk of Infection
